Neighborhood Beautification Initiative (NBI)

With warmer weather comes community building and aesthetic enhancements throughout the Village.  The Neighborhood Beautification Initiative (NBI) was developed to provide funding, management, and installation services for the beautification of existing neighborhoods to the benefit of the entire Village.  Funding is provided to those projects that are deemed appropriate and that show consensus and a significant neighborhood commitment.  Projects are to be directed towards improving the appearance of the neighborhood while also being noticeable to the rest of the community.  The program is administered by the Community Development Committee with projects authorized by the full Board of Trustees.

A resident of Pheasant Ridge sought the support of his thirty-five neighbors to make improvements to the entryway off of Kelsey Road.  Trees were pruned and outdated shrubs were replaced with a variety of plant material adding color, texture and height to the landscaping beds.

NBI Grant Recipients

Eight neighborhoods have been awarded Neighborhood Beautification Initiative (NBI) grants.  The projects are as diverse as the neighborhoods in scope and type.

Alice Lane

Perennials, ornamental grasses and a new sign adorns the entryway of Alice Lane located on Kelsey Road south of the Kelsey Road Bridge.  Solar lights will illuminate the sign at night.  Residents pooled together funding and submitted a plan for the new landscaping bed and sign.  Given its high visibility on Kelsey Road, this project is an excellent example of what a small residential nook can do to help beautify the community at large.

Barrington Harbor Estates

Barrington Harbor Estates is a 139 home subdivision located on the Fox River which maintains its own harbor and private park.  Welcome areas were refreshed with perennials.  A tree and shrubs located behind the main entranceway located at Kelsey Road and Harbor Drive were pruned and barberry, creeping phlox, feather reed grass and catmint were planted to expand and adorn the existing landscaping bed.

Estates at Lake Barrington

Aesthetic improvements are evident throughout the Estates at Lake Barrington located in central Lake Barrington.   The Estates at Lake Barrington was awarded NBI funding to support its extensive entryway and landscape enhancements throughout the subdivision.  The ELBHA has made a substantial investment to implement their Land/Water Management and Landscaping/Beautification Program which began in 2002.  The Program has detailed projects and ongoing programs that meet key elements such as retention ponds management, erosion/buffer control, tree management/development, beautification, and maintenance.   Projects include completion of additional landscape beds along Hillfarm Road, embellishing their two entryways located at Old Barrington Road and Miller Road, and bench/sitting areas installed along pond buffer areas.

Farm Trails

A vast array of living color will be blossoming Spring through Fall at Cayuga Trail and River Road.  Farm Trails is using the NBI grant to help fund the second phase of a project that began last fall to plant a diverse selection of shrubs and flowers to bloom all seasons.   The Farm Trails entrance will be graced with 300 daffodils bulbs, asters, sedum, evergreens, ornamental grasses, knockout rose bushes, campanula, creeping Phlox and other flora.

Flint Lake Estates

Flint Lake Estates is a subdivision of approximately 100 homes located off of Old Barrington Road.  The primary entrance is located at the corner of Old Barrington Road and Woodland Drive.  The project had three components:  1) enhancing the landscaping around the sign with more appealing, visible, deer-resistant plantings; 2) lighting the existing sign; and 3) replacement of the aging, rusting metal guardrail with a functional, more appealing barrier which exists to prevent cars from leaving the road and entering Flint Creek.  The area behind the sign was pruned and the landscape bed was expanded with a variety of perennials and shrubs providing a more visible, aesthetic entrance.

Wedgewood Trails

Wedgewood Trails took the opportunity to re-landscape their entranceway while addressing a drainage challenge that made it difficult to sustain plants.  The 20-year old entryway electrical system was also replaced for lighting.
